How It Works

Mainly Cremations provides New Zealand families with an affordable alternative to traditional funeral services. We aim to make the process as simple and transparent as possible. By partnering with trusted local providers for transportation and cremation, and connecting you directly with our experienced funeral consultants, we ensure a respectful and straightforward experience.

Step 1: Initial Consultation

We begin by guiding you through the process and gathering essential details about your loved one. Our goal is to ensure our service meets your specific needs while providing support and practical advice to help you navigate the days ahead. Together, we’ll create a clear plan for the next steps.

Step 2: Payment

To maintain our low-cost service, we require full payment once you’re comfortable with the proposed plan. Payment can be made securely via online banking or credit card.

Step 3: Paperwork and Death Registration

Your funeral consultant will assist with registering the death and will gather the required information from you. Once processed, we’ll order a New Zealand Death Certificate on your behalf. This official document is essential for managing estate matters such as bank accounts or superannuation. You’ll receive the certificate by post from the Department of Internal Affairs approximately 7-10 working days after the cremation.

Step 4: Transfer of the Deceased

We coordinate with a trusted local provider to transfer your loved one to a funeral home, where they will be cared for until the cremation takes place. Transfers occur during business hours (Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 5:00pm). At the time of transfer, the provider will ask you to complete the necessary cremation paperwork.

The deceased will remain in the care of the funeral home until the cremation, which typically occurs within 24 hours.

Step 5: The Cremation

The cremation is arranged by the funeral home and local crematorium, typically within 24 hours of transfer and during standard business hours. We’ll keep you informed and let you know once your loved one has been transferred to the crematorium.

Step 6: Ashes Collection and Memorial Options

Once the cremation is complete (usually within 4–7 days), we’ll contact you about collecting the ashes. We’ll also discuss memorial options such as holding a service, placing the ashes in a cemetery, or selecting a suitable urn.
